He was stalkery in House as he was in the series. But they did evolve into a relationship (albeit confusing) in HODS. That confusion came from the fact that the movie was edited to death and they were suddenly best friends and she was having dinner dates with him at the old house.

The most obvious example was the sudden scene during the party at Collinwood only minutes after they meet where Barnabas is telling Maggie that she shouldn’t leave and that they need her and so does he….and she buys into it. We can only assume they’ve spent a good deal of the night before talking etc. But wow, that’s sudden.

The problem is the same in this new film…although the feelings are far more tender as there is no other suitor for Vicki’s affections. She falls for Barnabas quickly and while its more easily believed, the film suffers due to the lack of we the audience getting to see these two grow in their fondness and caring for one another. They are both great actors and they play these characters well and work together.

I’m disappointed by this same issue having happened in this film too.

This bit screamed out at me: “Much like House of Dark Shadows did, we are simply to believe these two connected and fell in love in quick order.” Um. This is not at all what happens in HODS. Maggie like Barnabas well enough but by no stretch of the imagination does she love him. For that matter, he doesn’t love her. He just projects onto her the woman he loved and lost in life. Barnabas in HODS is a stalker, pure and simple, not a tragic figure in search of true love. Such was Dan Curtis’ original vision (and one I think we both dislike).

I really really like the guy playing Loki, but i can’t help wishing that Brent Spiner from like 20 years ago could have done it. Brent Spiner kicks ass.
