This months centerfold is Johnny Depp, beloved by Fangirls the world over.  Johnny is a dream for many of us as he personifies what we love in so many ways.  He’s artistic, talented, geeky, weird, the muse for Tim Burton, and he’s freaking gorgeous.  We Fangirls have come together to choose our favorite picture of Mr. Depp and give the reasons why we love him and why we chose that picture as our favorite.  So read on to see how we here at Fangirl feel about Johnny Depp, who’s more than just a pirate.

Rachel Says: Did you know that Johnny was friends with Ginsberg? Or that he really just wanted to be a musician (and was indeed in a band that had a minor hit)? Or that I used to answer my phone “Hello, is this Johnny Depp?” when people were confused I explained that it was a simple question with a yes or no answer? I mean, think about it, statistics say that eventually the answer will probably be “Yes”. I was going to explain how this picture is the epitome of how I’d like to think of Johnny… the Bohemian dream… but you have eyes. Or how I loved him since I was eight and Edward Scissorhands came out…. but you probably did too. Mmm…

Kristi Says: In the film “Blow,” Johnny Depp brings us the true story of George Jung, a man who rose through the ranks of the US cocaine trade in the 1970s. With long flaxen hair and a Jersey accent that could cut steel, Depp makes the viewer fall for this complete anti-hero. He romances a Columbian princess, rocks a white pantsuit while transporting drug money across the border to the tune of “Black Betty,” and finally breaks his little girl’s heart when he stands her up for the sake of one last deal. There are no scissor hands or purple coats or gold teeth anywhere in sight, just a truly compelling performance by one of the greatest character actors of his generation.

Miz Slick Says: Ahh, Johnny Depp…the mere mention of his name makes my knees quiver and my thoughts go to a very, very naughty place. And I’m obviously not alone in my feelings. He’s been making straight women and gay men (not to mention bisexual men and women) crazy with lust for decades now, and he’s only getting better with age. And he’s got ridiculous amounts of talent to go with that beautiful face, mind and body of his. To paraphrase my rather genius brother, “Even if the flick sucks, Depp is great.” I couldn’t have said it better myself. The man just has it all…talent, beauty, intelligence, sex appeal, integrity…and a fantastic ass! Aww come on, you were thinking the same thing!

Jessica’s Pick

Jessica Says:  Johnny Depp is my generations answer to the greats of Hollywood of yesteryear.  There aren’t many actors that I think are in the caliber of Johnny, a man who can morph into whatever character he wants to and pull it off with perfection.  Johnny is an artist of many facets.  He’s got a quirky side and is not afraid to be weird when the mood strikes him.  He flies in the face of convention and takes the time to be there for his fans.  He’s got a deffinite European mystique, but he’s a good ol’ Kentucky boy.  He has given birth to so many great characters of the fantasy genre with his co-collaborator and friend Tim Burton that it’s awe inspiring.  I also love the fact that thanks to Burton Johnny has shared the screen with some of those legends that I compare him to, namely Vincent Price (in one of his last roles) and Christopher Lee (twice).

So why did I pick the above picture?  The reason is simple.  Simple is what this picture is.  Johnny is beautiful.  Almost scarily beautiful and has not really aged over the years.  This picture showcases that part of him but at the same time, this is not one of those glamour shots that he’s done so often.  This is simply Johnny, haunting eyes with perfect lips and tousled hair.  But at the same time you can see a bit of razor burn and a few spots on his cheeks and scars.  There’s even a few wrinkles.  This is Johnny as Johnny, a  what you see is what you get shot.  There’s no suit or fashion going on, just a white t-shirt, very ordinary.  He’s just a guy, albeit one with eyes that could melt stone with their power.  But this is simple beauty and I think that’s what makes this picture the best ever taken of Lord Johnny.  No pretension, just wow…a legend in the making.
